Vortex Optics Razor Hd 27-60 Spotting Scope Review

Vortex Razor is an 85mm spotting scope that gives the performance of a large HD glass scope with a 27-60 zoom eyepiece and a wonderful carrying case for just $1367. This is a great value and here's why. Vortex Optics Razor Hd 27-60 x 85 Angled Spotting Scope

Optical Performance

The Razor HD is very sharp and bright right to the edge of the field of view. A slight magenta color bias is noted. The color fidelity is great. There is also a color aberration on high contrast and brightly lit objects. One good aspect of Razor opticals worth mentioning is its flat field performance. It stays sharp to the edge. There seems to be a lot of distortion at the very edge of the field, as straight lines seem to have an inclination to bow inwards, although this is relatively minor and not beyond normal.

Eyepiece

A 27-60x zoom eyepiece is offered with the Vortex Optics Razor HD spotting scope. There is a slight decline in the image quality at its highest magnification under certain conditions. But this seems to be common in zoom eyepieces in general. The fixed wide-angle eyepiece is an excellent choice for digiscoping. The eyepiece has a minimum of 18mm eye relief, which will not present a problem for those wearing glasses. It lacks any stabilized intermediate positions, but the intermediate positions don’t usually collapse on their own. The eyepiece is readily switched in the field, due to the standard bayonet-type mounts and a fully locking mechanism. A sliding button releases the lock to change eyepieces. Physical properties

The Vortex Optics Razor HD is only available in an angular configuration. The razor is compact with a zoom eyepiece in place. Weighing just over 4lbs the Razor is lighter than a regular full-sized scope. The Vortex Razor HD is completely waterproof, fog-proof and dust-proof. It also has a tripod mount. The body of the scope can rotate within its ring when the screws are released.

Conclusions

Like all Vortex products, the Razor HD comes with a VIP warranty. An unlimited warranty guaranteeing replacement of the scope if it requires any repairs or service. Along with it, you get an angled spotting service which is durable, lightweight and compact and an HD glass. Overall it has an excellent optical performance and also includes a world-class padded case just for $1367. When all this is put into perspective, it is not surprising that the Vortex Razor scopes sell well.
